In order to capture emitted carbon dioxide from large point sources, CCU(CO2 capture and utilizaiton) technologies has gained more importance due to the economic feasibility with significant contribution for CO2 reduction. Among the various CCU systems, photoautotrophic mass cultivation of microalgae is the most promising strategy for reducing CO2 from an relatively clean (natural-gas-fired) flue gas with the production of high value compounds including colorants, cosmetics, health-functional materials, and pharmaceuticals. Herein, we propose a cost-effective and energy-efficient CCU process using the unicellular green microalga, Haematococcus pluvialis, considered as the richest source of natural astaxanthin, the highest value ketocarotenoid. In our study, we also performed economic analysis of the microalgal (biological) CCU technology for the production of high-valued materials. The results showed outstanding economic potential at 10- and 100 –ton scale for astaxanthin production from Haematococcus pluvialis in compact urban-type microalgal culture system. |
