A 'rapid' and selective oxidation system is mechanistically developed to effectively convert 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), a surrogate of toxic sulfur mustard, into 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO), a far less toxic product. The catalytic system containing tribromide and nitrate and Brønsted acid sites derived from various homogeneous and heterogeneous acid catalysts allows a fast build-up of catalytic loop and facilitates the oxidation of CEES. Brønsted acid plays a crucial role to maintain a higher concentration of tribromide, a key reactive component in the reaction system. As a result, a dramatic enhancement of catalytic activity is observed, especially when the amount of acid catalyst is controlled to be more than twice the initial concentration of tribromide. In this presentation, the catalytic role of acid sites and recyclability of solid catalysts will be discussed. |
