The main goal of this project is the development of an economically viable process for production of hydrogen and elemental carbon via thermal decomposition (TD) of natural gas(methane). The objective of this work was to evaluate effects of reaction temperature and flow rate of CH4 on CH4 conversion and H2 concentration. We also examined effects of inlet CH4 flow rate on H2 production at reaction temperature 1300℃. During the experiment, we can obtain the hydrogen and carbon black as good products and a pyrocarbon as undesirable product at the same time. The pyrocarbon was deposited on the inside surface of the reactor, finally blocking the reactor. To solve this problem, we investigated three methods. First method is using a double pipe reactor which contains a porous pipe inside, second method is using air to burn the deposited pyrocarbon and third method is using carbon dioxide to burn the deposited pyrocarbon on the surface of the reactor. TEM images showed that carbon black and pyrocarbon had all unique shape. GC measured gas products in this work. |
