A large amount of energy requirement for solvent regeneration is a major barrier to the widespread adoption of amine-based post-combustion CO2 capture (PCC). Flexible operation responding to changes in economic factors like energy price, is one potential way to alleviate the energy penalty. As flexible operation will inherently involve a large operating envelope, both reliable control strategy and economic operation strategy should be required to address such time-varying operation. Here we suggest a combined control technology, so-called economic model predictive control (EMPC), for the flexible operation. We construct a data-driven NARX model to capture nonlinear dynamics that lie along the wide operation range. Then, the advanced control strategy, which reflects current and future energy price changes via value function approximation, is introduced. |
