A novel approach of shale gas supply chain network considering the enhanced gas recovery using carbon dioxide in unconventional reservoirs |

To determine the optimal design of a shale gas supply chain network (SGSCN), we develop a novel optimization model that considers CO2 injection technology to enhance shale gas productivity, which achieves a reduction in net CO2 emission simultaneously. The optimal framework is compared to the case (Case 1) when the EGR-CO2 technology is not used to improve the shale gas production rate, to demonstrate its superiority over the previous approaches. Specifically, the overall profit of the proposed SGSCN that applies EGR-CO2 technology by using CO2 purchased from the external market (Case 2) is about 3% higher than Case 1 and about 10% higher than the SGSCN model by using CO2 recovered from the flue gases emitted during shale gas combustion for electricity generation (Case 3). In order for Case 3 to be more profitable than other cases, the CO2 purchase should be higher than 5 US$ per MCF CO2. |
