Optimum Drilling Conditions of Aircraft CFRP Compositeusing CVD and PCD Tools |

Recently CFRP joints process is developed in aircraft industries which is different from conventional process. The optimum condition of drilling process of aircraft CFRP tools were investigated using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) drill and polycrystalline crystalline diamond (PCD) drill with different rpm and feed. In this work, hole drilling process between PCD and CVD drill was compared in terms of thermal damage and drill shape during drilling process. Investigation of the chip emission is one of important parameter to obtain optimum process. Although CVD drill exhibited higher temperature than that of PCD drill case, processing is faster due to high feed condition. Fast processing is important for CFRP drilling process. CVD drill can be used more economically for aircraft CFRP composites than PCD drill. Acknowledgement: this work was supported by the Korea Aerospace Industries, LTD.
