In this study, the effects of the filler on the hardness and modulus of elastomer compounds were investigated as a function of temperature, using a newly designed IRHD-type hardness tester and a tensile tester. Various amounts of carbon black and silica fillers are compounded with NR and SBR. The crosslink density was also calculated by swelling method, using the Flory-Rehner equation. Above Tg of the elstomers, the hardness of filled elastomer increased with increasing temperature and it is thought the increase is relasted to an increase in entropy. However, at 50phr of carbon black filled NR, the hardness was decreased with increasing temperature possibly due to a restriction of molecular mobility. The hardness and the modulus also increased with increasing the crosslink density. |
