The synthesis of acetic acid by carbonylation of methanol has been successfully commercialized through Monsanto process, which is based on using homogeneous rhodium catalysts, however, some problems such as large energy consumption and difficult separation of homogeneous catalyst caused to develop efficient heterogenized homogeneous catalysts. In the present study, carbonylation of methanol with carbon monoxide was investigated by using the novel heterogenized homogeneous rhodium catalyst supported on tungsten carbide with different amount of pre-synthesized rhodium complex. The carbonylation reaction was carried out at a batch reactor at 4.0 MPa and 413 K for 7 h. Among the tested catalysts, the superior activity and selectivity to acetic acid was observed on 30 wt. %Rh on tungsten carbide. The properties of heterogenized homogeneous catalysts were characterized by using XRD, BET, and ICP-MS and FT-IR analysis. |
