We have developed an efficient and simple way to graphene/polymer hydrogel nanofibers. An aqueous dispersion of graphene pieces stabilized by a functionalized water-soluble polymer having aromatic-ring side-chains was electrospun to produce nanofibers. The vapor-phase cross-linking of the nanofibers produced graphene hydrogel nanofibers (GHNFs). Interestingly, cationic dyes such as methylene blue (methylene blue, MB) and crystal violet (crystal violet, CV) were selectively adsorbed on the GHNFs in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the MB and CV molecules are oriented parallel to the graphene surface and that the graphene/dye ensemble become stabilized by a secondary physical coupling mechanism such as a π-π stacking interaction. |
