Kinetics and sorption studies on the removal of cesium in water by magnetic hydrogel beads |

The Severe nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in 2011 released a huge amount of radioactive cesium into natural environments. Although commercial available Cs adsorbents have effective sorption property, they cannot be directly applied to natural environments because there is no easy way to collect them after use. To address this problem, we developed a magnetic beads composed of polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) hydrogel, magnetic nanoparticles, and commercial prussian blue to remove the cesium from water. To determine equilibrium sorption and kinetic parameters for different initial cesium ion concentrations, all the studies were conducted by a batch method. we found to be described the best by a Langmuir sorption isotherm. Sorption kinetics data were analysed, using different kinetic models. The results show that the sorption follows pseudo second-order reaction kinetics. Moreover, the beads selectively adsorbed Cs even in the presence of competing cations. |
