Biofuels from microalgae has been considered as the most promising alternative for petroleum diesel. However, the biomass drying in biodiesel production process consumes intensive energy, which substantially lowers energy recovery. In this work, we performed hydrothermal liquefaction of Chlorella sp., which does not require biomass drying, to improve energy recovery of microalgal biofuels. The hydrothermal liquefaction reaction conditions were as follows: water content of 80%, reaction time of 5 to 30 minute, temperatures of 300℃ and 350℃. The biocrude yields, elemental compositions, and higher heating values obtained for various reaction conditions helped predict the optimum conditions for maximizing energy recovery. As a result, the best condition of biocrude yield was attained with a 300℃, 10 minutes. In this condition, 50% of biocrude yield was attained, but maximum energy recovery of 78% was obtained at 350℃ and 5 minutes. |
