Outdoor algal cultivation is the only realistic culture system because of the utilization of sunlight and the performance of the CO2 fixation. However, outdoor algal cultivation has been stagnated by the realistic limitation of stressful conditions and it caused low biomass productivity. Also, the economic feasibility of biofuel from microalgae is not achievable when it competed with fossil fuels. Therefore, one of the extremophiles was suggested to sort out these problems. Extremophile Galdieria sulphuraria is acidophilic and thermophilic microalgae, so it has a tolerance on various stresses. In addition, the phycocyanin it has, could be produced without much up and down under continuously changing conditions. In this study, phototrophic and mixotrophic cultivation of Galdieria sulphuraria were conducted in a flask scale. For both conditions, biomass yield, chlorophyll content, and phycocyanin content were compared and the anti-oxidative effect was also assessed. |
