In this study, we developed a fluidic type electrophoretic reflective display with colloidal photonic crystal. We used the anionic surface charged acrylic colloidal polymers to the photonic crystal. Due to the charge stabilization of colloidal particles, they were self-assembled within the organic medium and formed opal structure. This structure enabled the diffraction of the specific color by Bragg’s law. With low DC voltage bias, the inter-particle spaces were changed and the reflective color was tuned. Such electrically tuned color can be utilized as a full color display device. By using the oil with low dielectric constant, no electrochemical reactions occurred which are inevitable problems in aqueous system. To overcome the aggregation of particles in oil, the surface charge of colloidal system was controlled by using a specific surfactant. We also investigated the effects of particle size and content, and surfactant concentration on structural color of the reflective display. |
