Three different sizes of pDMAEMA shells coated silica nanoparticles were fabricated by vapor deposition polymerization. The polymer shell on the silica surface was evaluated by electron microscopy studies. In this work, overall particle diameter could be controlled by varying the diameter of the silica core. Due to its enlarged surface area, the pDMAEMA coated silica nanoparticles exhibited antibacterial activity without additional quaternization. Additionally, reducing the particle size enhanced the bactericidal efficiency because the pDMAEMA nanoparticles provide large surface area and more active sites that can eliminate the bacteria. |
