The object of this study is to develop fluorescence crack sensors by which microcracks are detected by fluorescence change. Anthracene-type dimers were synthesized via [4+4] cycloaddition, and crosslinked polymers (Poly-AA and Poly-AC) were synthesized by acetalization or esterification between the dimers and poly(vinyl alcohol). It was demonstrated that anthracene moieties were regenerated upon cracking of the polymers. It was observed that the crack planes in the Poly-AA and Poly-AC coatings showed strong fluorescence while the uncracked surfaces did not. Fluorescence microscopic images of microcracks in the polymer coatings were obtained by excitation with 330-385 nm UV light. |
