Poly(1,1-di(cinnamoyloxymetyl)ethane-co-1,1,1-tris(cinnamoyloxymetyl)ethane) (poly(DCE-co-TCE)) microcapsules were synthesized via photochemical [2+2] cycloaddition. Microcapsules were prepared by using photo polymerization and suspension polymerization with sodium p-styrene sulfonate (NaSS) as a co-monomer and stabilizer. These capsules, showing self-healing effect in itself, also incorporated same monomers (i.e., DCE and TCE) as healing agent in the core part. When the shell of the poly(DCE-co-TCE) microcapsules cracked under the physical stress, these monomers would be released into the crack, and then polymerized by day light or UV light without any photo-initiator. After all, the monomers as healing agents could bond the crack faces semi-permanently. In addition, these microcapsules can be converted to film forms containing self-healing effect by embedding in epoxy resin. |
