Stents, despite their success, are widely used with high efficiency, but restenosis and thrombosis are still an issue that makes medical specialists sleepless trying to reach an optimum system; starting with bare metal stents then passing through non-biodegradable coated metallic stents and ending with the most recent drug-eluting stents. With nitric oxide (NO) being one of the factors that researchers found to have beneficial anti-restenotic effects due to its role in keeping a healthy vasculature, and the popularity of liposomes as a biologically inert drug carrier. In this study, we focused on to try and reach an optimum coating technique of liposome encapsulated with DETA-NONOate, a NO donor, that will accomplish a long-term sustained release of NO by comparing three main coating techniques, containing direct coating on metal, direct coating with polymer layer, and layer-by-layer coating technique. |
