제목 The relation between chemotactic behavior of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii towards bicarbonate and the carbon dioxide utilization
초록 Microalgae have attracted substantial attention for their ability to produce various products utilizing CO2. Many efforts have been made to investigate the various biological functions using a model microalga, C. reinhardtii. Especially, HCO3− acquisition with the support of CO2 concentrating mechanism, which is a cellular strategy to increase internal levels of dissolved inorganic carbon, has been studied since HCO3− is the dominant form of DIC in most aquatic ecosystems. Despite the importance, unlike other nutrients, the chemotaxigenesis of HCO3− is still unknown. In this study, we demonstrated the chemotaxis of C. reinhardtii towards HCO3− using a hydrogel-based convection-free microfluidic device. The availability of the device was attested by previously studied chemicals, showing NH4Cl and CoCl2 are chemoattractants, while NaCl is neutral. To the best of our knowledge, we observed the chemotaxis of C. reinhardtii towards HCO3− for the first time and found the concentration for the strongest response (~30mM). In circadian clock-related chemotaxis assay, the chemotaxis peaked in the middle of the subjective night while the response was quite low during the daytime.
