Poly(L-Lactide) (PLA) is a biodegradable aliphatic polyester. Generally, PLA was synthesized by two different methods; these are condensation polymerization (CP) and ring-opening polymerization(ROP). In CP separation of byproduct is very difficult and also the molecular weight (MW) of the polymer is very low; to avoid this problems researchers mainly synthesis of PLA by ROP in presence of metal catalyst; these are expensive, moisture sensitive and toxic to the environment. Due to this we used double metal cyanide (DMC) catalyst is highly air stable, nontoxic and excellent catalytic properties for the synthesis of polycarbonate polyols. We studied DMC catalytic property for the synthesis of PLA by ROP of L-Lactide (LA) and using benzyl alcohol as an initiator. The advantage of this method is easy to separate DMC form reaction mixture no byproduct formation. The all synthesized polymers of targeted MW ranged in between MW 8,100-19,600. |
