Catalytic CO2/prolylene oxide copolymerization |

Double metal cyanide complex (DMC) prepared by salt metathesis reaction of K3Co(CN)6 with ZnCl2 is commercially used in propylene oxide (PO) homopolymerization, which also shows activity in PO/CO2 copolymerization though CO2 insertion is not full; fraction of carbonate linkage to ether linkage (FCO2) fluctuates in a wide range (10-60 mol%) depending on the preparation method and conditions. Preparation of the DMC catalyst is somewhat tedious, requiring many times uneasy washing process. In this work, we disclose a preparative scale (100 g scale) synthesis of H3Co(CN)6 of which structure was elucidated by X-ray crystallography. The DMC catalyst prepared with H3Co(CN)6 yielded polymers with high carbonate linkage fraction (FCO2 0.48-0.66, depending on CO2 pressure). |
