Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is an attractive technology to convert solar energy and water into a transportable and storable chemical energy. Delafossite CuFeO2 is a promising photocathode material with a band structure is suitable for both solar hydrogen production and CO2 reduction. However, in spite of its advantages such as small band gap, high onset potential, earth abundant elements and relatively good stability in aqueous solution, its performance is low because of poor charge transport properties. Here, to enhance the photo-activity of CuFeO2, CuCrO2/CuFeO2 heterojunction is attempted to improve charge separation and charge transport properties of CuFeO2. The band position of CuCrO2 is well matched with CuFeO2 to promote hole transfer towards the substrate. Further, some characterization methods such as UV-Visible spectrometry, X-Ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy is done to identify each role of CuCrO2/CuFeO2, and proposed post modification plan such as protective layer, co-catalyst deposition for further photocatalytic performance improvement. |
