For the fabrication of an tunable polarized light modulator, we newly designed and synthesized a photo responsive metallomesogen dye containing four azobenzenes, abbreviated as Pd(DL)2. The phase transition behavior of Pd(DL)2 is investigated by DSC. Pd(DL)2 formed a tilted version of a highly ordered smectic crystal phase. It was demonstrated by thermal and morphological analyses combined with X-ray diffraction results. Because of the good solubility of Pd(DL)2 in LC components, it can be a dichroic dye candidate for the LC devices. Also, the absorption intensity can be tuned through an in-plane electric field induced reorientation of Pd(DL)2 molecules. We proposed that understanding the relationship between the molecular structure of dichroic dye and its physical property will be the key for the fabrication of optically and electrically tunable polarized light modulator.
