SYNTHESIS AND APPLICATION OF DICHROIC DYES CONTANING CARBOXYL AND PYRIDINE MOIETY FOR POLARIZING FILMS |

Dichroic dyes were designed to have linear disazo structure (J-acid + J-acid + bezene or pyridine) and introduced carboxyl group for highly efficient polarizing film. All dyes had superior substantivity and polarizing films with the dyes showed higher optical properties of more than 40% of transmittance and 99% of polarizing efficiency. Carboxyl group improved substantivity and dichroic ratio due to its hydrogen bonding and electron withdrawing ability. Introduced position of carboxyl group has a significant influence on dyeing and optical properties and advantageous position was para position of azo group. Introduction of pyridine brought little decrease in dichroic ratio as compared with benzene moiety but it is increased substantivity by supplement of hydrogen bonding group without change of linearity. It is shown that the comparative studies of dichroic dyes with different structures are useful to better understand the improvement in properties of dye based polarizing films. |
