Preparation and characterization of PMMA/liquid crystal microcapsules by solvent evaporation technique for color PDLC |

PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) has been investigated and developed by many researchers since 1985 because there are great potential for applications in large display devices. Recently, there are two main fabrication methods for PDLC: the phase separation method and the microencapsulation method. For color PDLCs, dichroic dyes are incorporated in the PDLC formulation. In the case of phase separation method, however, dichroic dyes exist not only in the liquid crystal (LC) domain but also in the polymer matrix, which does not respond to the electric field deteorating the contrast ratio(C/R) of the resulting PDLC devices. In this study, we prepared color PDLC by microencapsulation method for improving contrast ratio (C/R) and optical properties. Microcapsules were prepared from PMMA and LC by using solvent evaporation method which can easily encapsulate in less costs and times. The morphologies of LC microcapsules were confirmed by OM/POM and SEM. |
