Ion-exchange membranes have been used in various industries because of their superior selectivity for specific ions and wide applicability. A diverse range of ion-exchange membranes have been applied to fuel cells, electrodialysis (ED), the production of acids and bases from water decomposition by water-splitting electrodialysis, and the recovery of acid and valuable metal species from waste water by diffusion dialysis (DD). Non-crosslinking type cation exchange membranes were prepared using polystyrene of each different molecular weight. Molecular weights of polystyrenes used are 170000, 550000, and 2000000 g/mol, respectively. Sulfuric acid was used as a sulfonation agent in the experiment. The prepared membranes were investiged using elemental analysis, water uptake, electrical resistance, ion exchange capacity(IEC), and tensile strength. weight of polystyrene.
