Thin Films of Self-assembled PS-b-PEO Diblock Copolymer Micelles Containing CdS and TiO2 Nanoparticles:Morphology and Photocatalytic Studies |

The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticle/block copolymer (BCP) hybrid systems has been extensively studied in recent years. Herein, we engineered CdS and TiO2 within PS-b-PEO block copolymer (SEO) thin films. Hydrophobically modified CdS nanoparticles were synthesized using a modified kinetic-trapping method and TiO2 was synthesized by sol-gel process. The CdS and TiO2 nanoparticles were distributed in PS and PEO domains, respectively, of a micellar solution of PS-b-PEO block copolymer. The addition of CdS quantum dot into BCP/TiO2 sol-gel mixture changes the morphology from mixed wire/hexagonal packing to complete ordered hexagonal packing arrangement. UV-Vis studies showed an enhanced and red shifted absorption of CdS/TiO2-SEO with increasing the concentration of CdS. Photoluminescence studies showed a quenching of CdS emission in the presence of TiO2. An enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue has been observed in the case of CdS/TiO2-SEO thin film. |
