The goal of this work was to develop a membrane using simple and direct sulfonation of PVDF powder without prior complication of grafting or irradiation techniques. To this purpose, we prepared the negatively charged poly(vinylidene fluoride)(PVDF) cation exchange membranes(CEM) were prepared using direct sulfonation with chlorosulfonic acid. The CEM was composed of a blend of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and sulfonated PVDF (S-PVDF). To investigate the structure, morphology and Surface area of the membrane, we used the Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). Also, we determined the thermal stability, water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and ion conductivity of the prepared membranes as functions of duration and degree of sulfonation. As the sulfonation reaction time was furthered, the degree of sulfonation and ion exchange capacity increased. |
