Pore-filled membranes by filling sulfonated poly (arylene ether ketone) (SPAEK) with an 80% degree of sulfonation (DS) into the plasma-treated porous poly (arylene ether ketone) membrane (PAEK) for direct methanol fuel cell applications. The porous substrates with different average diameters from ~50 nm to ~2.6 m were established by the selective removal of PLA molecules from the self-assembled PAEK-PLA copolymers. The morphology and a variety of membrane properties including water uptake, dimensional swelling, methanol permeability, thermal and mechanical stability, and proton conductivity were investigated. The pore-filled membranes prepared in this study showed improved thermal and dimensional stability and reduced methanol permeability compared to the pristine SPAEK and Nafion 117 membranes, and the membrane with a pore diameter of 50 nm showed the highest proton conductivity and low methanol permeability. |
