Glycerolysis of urea over ZnO and ZnAl mixed oxide catalysts: the Zn-containing species |

Glycerol carbonate can be synthesized under various catalysts by reaction routes homogeneous and heterogeneous. In this research, the catalysts: ZnO and Zn/Al oxide (containing ZnO and ZnAl2O4 phases) are prepared and experimented for the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol and urea at 140oC under vacuum condition (3kPa) to remove ammonia by-product. Reaction results are checked by GC-FID using internal standard method (tetraethylene glycol). XRD and FT-IR analysis of liquid products, fresh catalysts and spent catalysts are used to investigate the Zn-containing species. In the case of ZnO catalyst, glycerolate is produced by the direct reaction of ZnO and glycerol since the initial of reaction without the existence of NCO complex in spent catalyst. In the case of Zn/Al oxide catalyst, NCO complex can be detected since the beginning but Zinc glycerolate only appears after 2h reaction. |
