Synthesis, characterization and electrochemical properties of LiFePO4/C composite cathodes prepared with amorphous FePO4xH2O precursor |

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) is prepared using two different starting materials which involved the precipitation and lithiation of an amorphous FePO4·xH2O precursor followed by heat treatment process. The XRD patterns confirm the incompletely crystallized nature of both the precipitated and lithiated product, while a crystalline LiFePO4 product is obtained after thermal treatment. Glucose, a cheap carbon source, is used for conductive coating of LiFePO4 particles which also prevent the growth of LiFePO4 particles during heat treatment. It also act as a reducing agent. There is no evidence of diffraction peaks for carbon due to its low content in composites. The lattice parameters are calculated from XRD patterns and the calculated values well agree with those of other literature. The pre-synthesized precursors and subsequent LiFePO4/C composites are characterized by differential scanning colorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). The microstructure & morphology of the samples characterized scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Galvanostatic charge/discharge tests are employed to characterize their electrochemical properties. |
