High performance Li-S batteries enabled by controlled Li2S nucleation and growth via electrolyte salt selection |

Li-S batteries become the promising candidates to replace Li-ion batteries based on the high energy density. However, an insulating lithium sulfide (Li2S) deposits on the electrode in a random manner during discharge. Then, the uncontrolled growth causes high polarization and imposes a limitation in realizing high sulfur utilization. Here we report, by controlling the electron donating ability of electrolyte salt anions, it is possible to trigger 3D growth of Li2S. The morphologies with changing the anion characteristic are clearly demonstrated using ex-situ and electrochemical analysis including chronoamperometry. The modulation in Li2S deposition by simple modification leads to ~95% of sulfur utilization. We prove that the anion can change the electrodeposition process with affecting on the dissociation degree of Li2S. This finding offers a novel academic approach for designing high-performance Li–S batteries, which exploits the critical role of anion in Li2S nucleation and growth. |
