Pure UV absorber(UVA) in sol-gel coatings is subject to the loss of weatherability by its diffusion and evaporation or leaching, whose effectiveness is limited. To overcome these defects, UVA must be modified for the formation of chemical bonding with sol-gel network. In order to follow aim, we prepared UVA having silane coupling agent, and its characterization by FT-IR and 1H-NMR revealed that it was successfully synthesized. Also, coating agents were prepared via the sol-gel process using methyltriethoxysilane, colloidal silica, and UVA containing silane coupling agent. Their UV-stabilization was estimated by UV/VIS spectrometer, spectrophotometer, and QUV tester. Abrasion-resistance was mesured by means of taber type abrader. As a result, UVA having silane coupling agent had better photostability and abrasion resistance than UVA, because of its chemical bonding.
