Iron is an essential trace metal and a limiting factor for microalgal growth. In this study we examined the effects of cationic and anionic part of six iron sources (FeCl3, FeCl2, ferric EDTA, ferrous EDTA, ammonium iron III sulphate and ammonium iron II sulphate) on Dunaliella tertiolecta biomass, lipid and carbohydrate content. Three of these iron sources (FeCl3, ferric EDTA and ammonium iron II sulphate) were selected for further investigation using their high concentrations. The cationic part of iron sources were not having any significant impact on D. tertiolecta growth and lipid carbohydrate content. However, anionic part of iron sources showed a major impact on D. tertiolecta growth and lipid carbohydrate content. High concentration of FeCl3 (5X) and ferric EDTA (3X) produced maximum lipid content of 35%, while maximum carbohydrate content (56%) were achieved in the presence of 3X ammonium iron II sulphate. Whereas, both maximum lipid productivity (332 mg/L/d) and maximum carbohydrate productivity (421 mg/L/d) were achieved in the presence of 10X ammonium iron II sulphate. |
