World crude oil reserves will be depleted eventually, but, more than half of world energy consumption still depends on petroleum and natural gas. One of the potential solutions for the global energy problem is biodiesel from microalgae. Generally, biodiesel production process includes two steps: lipid extraction from biomass and transesterification of the extracted lipid. The direct-transesterification combines the two-step operations into one by using the raw biomass for transesterification without lipid extraction process. A green microalga, Dunaliella tertiolecta LB999, is known as a massive lipid producer. Biodiesel production via direct-transesterification using the biomass of D. tertiolecta was investigated. The lipids in the biomass were successfully converted into biodiesel, and the yield of direct-transesterification was 99.2%. As larger quantity of solvent is used in the direct-transesterification process than in the conventional two-step process, reusing methods for the solvent will be developed as the further study. |
