Comparison of Static and Dynamic Contact Angle Measurements combined with IFSS between Fiber and Matrix |

There are various methods for the evaluation of the interface between the two materials. In this study, contact angle was used as an measuring method of adhesive condition in two dissimilar materials. Dynamic and static contact angles confirmed the accuracy of two methods mutually. Composite materials using glass fiber and epoxy was chosen for the interface between fiber and matrix. Surface energies of glass fiber and epoxy based on amine were measured by the static and dynamic contact angles. Work of adhesion (Wa) between fiber and epoxy was obtained from measured surface energies. Interfacial shear stress (IFSS) was also measured for the comparison with Wa. Static contact angle was easy to analyse but the accuracy was lower than dynamic contact angle due to the combined effects of elapsing time and solution surface tension. The tendance between IFSS and dynamic contact angle was consistent with each other. |
