Film-type hydrogel electrodes have received increasing attention in biomedical applications. However, poor mechanical properties and non-uniform electrical performance should be overcome for wearable biosignal monitoring. Herein we report a new gelatin based hydrogel electrode crosslinked by a natural crosslinker(genipin) for human electrocardiogram(ECG) measurement. After incorporating conducting polymers poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) into the gelatin hydrogel, mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of the gelatin hydrogel were improved and more optimized by adjusting the by the amounts of crosslinker and PEDOT. In addition, the effect of dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) used as a dopant on ECG measurement was investigated. The PEDOT/gelatin hydrogel(PGH) film showed better skin contact without skin irritation and a similar performance in ECG measurement compared to standard ECG electrodes. The PGH could be used as an electrode for monitoring biosignals. |
