Lignin is the most abundant potential renewable source for aromatic building blocks and other chemicals. Though, due to its insoluble nature, the application of lignin was limited. By the reaction with phenol, lignins (Organosolv lignin and EFB Klason lignin) was able to dissolve in organic solvent and made lignin became precursor for various usage such as polymer or energy storage. However, this process faced to the energy issue because of the harsh reaction conditions (high temperature and long reaction time). Hence, in this study, sulfuric acid was used as the catalyst, which can reduce both reaction time (from over 6 hours to 20 minutes) and temperature (from 180oC to 100oC) for the organosolv lignin phenolation. Besides, using microwave energy leading to the decrease of both reaction time and temperature. The phenolated lignin structures were characterized using HSQC NMR and the thermal properties were studied by TGA and DSC. |
