Improved flame retardancy of expandable polystyrene foam using intumescent flame retardant coating |

An expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) is one of the main product in the insulation marcket because of its light weight and low cost. However, fire safety is an immense challenge in expanded polystyrene foam. To overcome this issue, research is actively underway to provide improved flame retarding materials through desired compositions. In this study, we have prepared a methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) coated EPS microspheres along with intumescent flame-retardant by addition and mixing method. The morphological analysis is revealed that the intumescent flame-retardant materials successfully coated on MDI modified EPS microspheres. The cone calorimetric analysis (CONE) exhibited total heat release (7.3 MJ/m2), heat release rate (57.6 kW/m2), and fire growth rate (2027.067 W/m-2s) and maintained structural integrity after conbustion. |
