Synthesis of polyaniline/laponite nanocomposites and their electro-response under applied electric fields |

We prepared polyaniline (PANI)/laponite nanocomposite particles via an in-situ chemical oxidation polymerization process, using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant in an aqueous solution. Chemical structure of the synthesized product was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. When dispersed in silicone oil with a volume fraction of 10%, PANI/laponite composite dedoped to a low conductivity exhibited electrorheological (ER) characteristics. Chain structures of the ER fluid under an exposed electric field were observed by an optical microscopy. Their ER characteristics such as shear viscosity, shear stress and yield stress were analyzed using a rotational rheometer in the presence of different electric field strengths. The suspension of composite particle displayed a clear ER effect due to conducting property of PANI and laponite under an applied electric field. |
