Double shell SiO2/TiO2 hollow nanoparticles (DS HNPs) are fabricated using a sol–gel method and sonication-mediated etching. The DS HNPs are adopted for electrorheological (ER) fluids to examine an effect of shell structure on ER activities. Compared with single shell SiO2/TiO2 hollow nanoparticles, the yield stress of DS HNPs-based ER fluid is enhanced by 4.1-fold, which is ascribed to the increased interfacial polarization. Furthermore, the yield stress of DS HNPs-based ER fluids increases with decreasing the particle diameter, attributed to a large achievable polarizability. Moreover, the DS HNPs-based ER fluids exhibit superior anti-sedimentation property. |
