Nanotube-on-Graphene hybrid structures for biosensor applications |

Living biological systems such as cells and tissues communicate with their external environment via ion channels that regulate intracellular ion concentrations. Conventional electrophysiology techniques including voltage/current clamp and patch clamp methods have been used to study such ion channel activities, but they tend to be invasive or even destructive. Accordingly, non-invasive and high-resolution detecting technique is critical to the next phase of electrophysiology. We fabricated the nanotube-on-graphene hybrid structures as a minimally invasive sensor platform to study biological systems. Nanotubes were utilized as an artificial nanofluidic channel which connects the graphene with the intracellular medium of cells/tissues. The nanotube-on-graphene hybrid structures ensured noninvasive and high-resolution electrical detection of ion channel activities in living cell lines. |
