제목 Preparation and Characterization of Electronic inks by in-situ Emulsifier-free Emulsion polymerization for Electrophoretic Displays (EPDs)
초록 Emulsifier-free emulsion polymerizations of methylmethacrylate (MMA) with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) were performed both in an aqueous and in the mixture of water and methanol. V-50 and oil blue N were used as an initiator and a coloring agent, respectively. On increasing the concentration of oil blue N and E-81, the particle size decreased first and then increased in the absence of methanol, whereas particle size progressively decrease in the presence of methanol. The addition of methanol in the polymerization also influences the polymerization kinetic, the charge density of electronic ink particles. The resulting electronic inks were found to be smooth on the spherical surfaces and a particle sizes were 0.3 ~ 0.8 mm with a coefficient of variation 0.3%. Electrophoretic mobility of the resulting electronic ink was 2.08 ~ 5.82ⅹ10-5cm2/V.s in the presence of charge control additives. Effects of methanol on the electronic inks characteristics have been discussed in terms of particle formation mechanism.
