We prepared a multi-layered thin film (MLF) for water-splitting photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. A new material, 9,9'-(4,4'-(methyl(4-(perylen-3-yl)phenyl)silanediyl)bis(4,1-phenylene))bis(9H-carbazole) (BCP-Si), was designed. In this structure, perylene serves as a sensitizer that absorb visible light and carbazole unit serve as precursor for electro-polymerization. Absorption spectrum of BCP-Si showed that the central silicon atom block the electronic interaction between carbazole and perylene. Electropolymerization of BCP-Si using CV generates thin film (p-BCP-Si). Cobalt nano-particle was deposited onto the p-BCP-Si film. The formation of MLF composed with p-BCP-Si and cobalt nano-particles was confirmed by SEM and EDX mapping. PEC hydrogen generation experiments with p-BCP-Si and MLF were carried out, and MLF showed hydrogen generation that indicates efficient electron transfer from p-BCP-Si to cobalt catalytic center, while p-BCP-Si does not produce any hydrogens. |
