Radiation-based graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) on polypropylene nonwoven fabric (PP-NF) in aqueous solution |

In this study, ecofriendly water-based emulsion graft polymerization of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) onto polypropylene nonwoven fabric (PP-NF) was investigated. The PP-NFs were irradiated by electron beam at various absorbed doses in N2 purged condition. Afterward, GMA grafted PP-NF was simply synthesized by graft polymerization on the irradiated PP-NFs in emulsion solution with GMA monomer and surfactant in water. The results of the various analyses revealed that GMA was successfully and evenly grafted on PP-NFs at the optimum concentration of emulsion solution including 10% of GMA and 1% of Tween 80, and degree of grafting was dependent on the absorbed dose. Especially, it was found that the emulsion stability and N2 purging are critical factors in emulsion graft polymerization system. |
