A green alga Scenedesmus culture was utilized to remove nitric oxide (NO) from a model flue gas mixture. NO solubility was increased to enhance microalgal uptake with the help of Fe(II)-complexed EDTA. When Fe(II)EDTA is added to the culture, the NO removal efficiency is high initially and soon decreased as time passes, because Fe(II) is oxidized to Fe(III) due to the oxygen evolved by photosynthesis and Fe(III)-EDTA does not able to dissolve NO. However, a certain degree of NO removal was maintained even though Fe(III)EDTA, instead of Fe(II)EDTA, was added to the culture. This study shows interesting results on the successful removal of NO and the role of iron-EDTA on the removal of NO by the microalgae culture. |
