Flavonols, a group of secondary palnt polyphenolic metabolites, is well known for pharmacological and health-promoting effects with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antistress response. Among enzymes in flavonol biosynthesis pathway, flavonoid-3',5'-hydroxylase is crucial in increasing antioxidant characteristic of flavonols. However, heterologous enzyme expression in E. coli is one of bottle neck in tranfering biosynthetic pathways from plant into E. coli. Flavonoid-3',5'-hydroxylase from Saintpaulia cultivar has been cloned and successfully expressed in E. coli. |
