Impatiens balsamina (IB) as medicinal herb has been used as traditional medicine to treat isthmus, fractures, superficial infections, fingernail inflammation, and so on. IB contains active components such as flavonoid figments, flavonols, phenolic compounds and lawsone, which are well known to have strong anti-microbial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antifungal. In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), glycerol and IB extracts were mixed and irradiated using gamma-ray at 10-35 kGy (10 kGy/h dose rate) to prepare IB hydrogel. Antibacterial activity of the IB hydrogel was determined against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Also, the physical properties including the gel fraction, swelling behavior, and gel strength was measured as a function of irradiation dose on the IB hydrogels. |
