Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most widely used in the world’s plasticizer market. However, DEHP can be easily extracted from the polymer matrix such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and act as an endocrine disruptor. In this study, hyperbranched polyglycerol (HPG) was successfully synthesized using glycidol, which is the byproduct from converting process of vegetable oil to biodiesel. Molecular weight of HPG was controlled by the molar ratio of initiator-to-glycidol, and structure of HPG was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Before flexible PVC sheets were prepared, HPG was modified for improving the miscibility with PVC. Plasticization efficiency and extraction resistance of PVC/m-HPG were analyzed and compared with PVC/DEHP. As the result of this study, bio-based plasticizer, which can be an alternative to DEHP, is developed. |
