Viscous behavior of glass composites with fillers |

Addition of fillers into materials has been considered as an effective way to improve some properties, in particular strength, flexibility, and coefficient of thermal expansion of the materials. Effect of filler particle size and content on the firing behavior and variation of properties of composites has mainly studied by various researchers. However, density of filler has not been considered a factor which affects the fluidity of composite. In this study, we conducted a flow button test with pellets made of glass frit and various fillers having different density, and discussed how density-differences affect the fluidity of composites. Bi2O3-ZnO-Al2O3-B2O3 glass frit was mixed with 5~20vol% fillers having different density using a turbular shaker mixer. Chemical reaction between the glass frit and fillers was confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry. The flow size of the composite was observed with particle size, content and density of the filler using a hot stage microscope. The distribution of filler in the melted glass was observed using scanning electron microscope. The particle size, content and density of the filler were highly related with the viscous behavior of the composite. The viscosity of composite was increased with increasing specific surface area, content and density of fillers because they obstruct the fluidity of glass composites. From the results, we could understand that the density of the filler may highly affect the viscous behavior of the composite and this study can contribute to expecting the viscosity of the composite with the characteristics of filler, particularly the density. |
