We herein report the development of tumor-targeted, pH and enzymatically degradable, crosslinked, fluorescent nanogel (F-nanogel)-based, boronic acid-conjugated, lactose modified-chitosan (chitlac-BOH), and dopamine- and nitric oxide-conjugated partially carbonized hyaluronic acid [NO/DA-FNP(HA)] for doxorubicin (DOX) loading as potential precursors for biomedical applications. In DOX-loaded F-nanogels, we demonstrated DOX and NO release due to pH cleavage of boronic acid–catechol diol cross-linking and enzymatic activity of hyaluronidase (HAase). Combining both pH and HAase content in cancer cells selectively regulates the release of DOX and NO by enzymatic activity. Such nanogels have the advantages of enabling fluorescent diagnosis by drug delivery matrix, being biocompatible, and releasing the drug from the breaking of linkage under cancer cell conditions.
